aNueNue UT10 BB Solid Top Black Beauty Ukulele
When I got these UT-10 ukuleles in, I got all six varieties from their colour series at the same time. This was the last of the six I came to describe and in each of the previous five cases, I have described each ukulele separately. So, when it comes to this one, late on a Friday, I find myself trying to find something other to say than, ‘great value, good specification ukulele with attractive looks’. Given all of the colour series tenor ukuleles from aNueNue sound the same, writing a sixth description that’s different is taxing me a bit!
If I was a marketing consultant for one of the giant manufacturers (think of a famous guitar brand beginning with ‘F’), I’d probably be claiming that the different colours impart a different tone. In fact, I might be onto something there… I could call it… Tonepaint! This black one would be warm and dark and brooding in sound, while the ice green one could be crisp and clear. I wouldn’t put it past them to go one step beyond their usual trick of describing different veneers as having a different sound!
There’s no need for me to do that (not that I would) because underneath the satin black finish of the UT-10 BB, there’s a solid spruce top. The back and sides, separated from the top with maple binding, is laminate mahogany. There’s a cutaway body shape, that looks very ‘aNueNue’, with a slightly raised, textured scratch guard to stop you damaging the finish while strumming. These ukuleles have a really nice padded gig bag and come with a 35mm nut, geared tuners and quality aNueNue Clear Water strings.
The tone is on the brighter side, but the initial burst of well-projected crispness gives way to a more balanced, warmer tone as the sound slowly ebbs away. It’s spruce, and has spruce-like bright qualities, but isn’t tinny or one dimensional. In short, it sounds good and that sound is impressive at this sort of price range. There are others I’d say can match it, but it’s definitely up there in terms of what’s possible to achieve on this relatively modest budget. (I know it’s not cheap, but aNueNue makes ukes up to £7,500!)
Before I go and have a lie down, just to point out this one, the black beauty, is a touch more expensive than some in the range as it has a rosewood fingerboard and star inlays for position markers. The majority of aNueNue’s colour series of ukes have a maple fingerboard (which I like equally), but the rosewood version is slightly more expensive to produce, hence the price difference. (Although it occurs to me later, that the blue one has a rosewood fingerboard… so I can’t tell you why the price is higher, but it is good value either way!)
Just one minor, boring point. Inside this uke it says UT-10. So I am going with that, although all my paperwork lists this as an aNueNue UCT-10.
A quick reminder. Shipping is included in the UK. To ship to the EU, if your order is less than £200, you’ll need to add £15 shipping to your basket. For the rest of the world, for orders under £400, you need to add £25 shipping to your basket.
