The aNueNue UT-10 IG is part of the company’s colour series of ukes, with colourful, sleek looks making a statement, while being a fundamentally well-made and nice-sounding uke. In fact, when you look at the price, factor in the build quality and the really nice gig bag that’s included, AND that it has a solid spruce top - well, it’s a good value thing even without the fancy looks.

In the past colourful ukes have often been those that are made for people to buy with their eyes, rather than their ears. Put a colourful finish on and people will buy it as it’s pretty, was the theory. But the UT-10 Ice Green tenor uke is much more than eye candy - it’s a really good uke underneath all the fancy visuals.

With quality geared tuners, a maple fingerboard and bridge (which I love the smoothness of), great aNueNue Clear Water strings (my favourite) and solid spruce, it’s got a lot going for it. As well as the cutaway shape and the raised scratch guard, there’s nice maple binding separating the satin finish colourful top from the laminate mahogany back and sides.

Tonally, as you’d expect from spruce, there’s good projection and a strong, bright character - but one the has a bit of ‘body’ too it too (so, clear and chiming, as opposed to tinny sounding). The nut width of 35mm feels unchallenging and ‘standard’, although perhaps they should have gone a little wider. I like 35mm myself, but the trend in the market is perhaps for an extra mm or so these days.

It is very well made but every UT-10 ukulele I’ve seen has a slightly higher action than I’d prefer. I will (automatically) lower this. Even if you know what you’re doing, the synthetic bone saddle is so rock-hard, you’d still want me to do it as I get a bit of a workout sanding it down.

There are plenty of pretty looking laminate instruments on the market at this price. But this is a pretty looking solid top instrument. Even on that score alone it does well. But when it’s made by aNueNue - who really know what they’re doing - you’re on to a winner.

Just one minor, boring point. Inside this uke it says UT-10. So I am going with that, although all my paperwork lists this as an aNueNue UCT-10.
