Baton Rouge UR71T Solid Redwood Top Tenor Ukulele
The UR-71T from Baton Rouge is a bit of a departure in some ways from their initial models. They were what I'd term 'serious beginner' instruments, as well as affordable 5,6 and 8 strings. The brand has firmly established itself amongst ukulele lovers for great value - so it seems a natural progression that they're experimenting with models that are a little more upmarket.
Having said it is a departure, the Baton Rouge DNA runs through this new model - with the nicely arched back retained, together with the headstock shape. The 37mm nut width, fairly chunky neck and big, bold volume too, are very Baton Rouge-esque.
The solid top is Australian redwood, which has a distinctive curving grain. The back and sides are spalted maple, which feels very smooth and looks stunning. There's a laser etched soundhole decoration, walnut fingerboard and bridge, Aquila strings and open geared tuners too.
The sound is very powerful and full - yet smooth and rounded too. The solid redwood is quite crisp, somewhere between spruce and cedar - but that arched back seems to take the edge off and balance it out with a little more mellowness.
