This is a neat little package with lots going for it, the Flight Diana Soundwave electro tenor ukulele. It has a gloss finish, solid cedar top and laminate walnut back and sides - the latter an interesting visual choice and with its dusky grey tones, an underused material.

Before going into the Flight Diana ukulele’s acoustic properties, it should be mentioned that something that’s very interesting about it is the Soundwave pickup system, made by Double. This features a lightweight internal speaker that not only boosts the volume when activated (and not though an amp), also carries reverb, delay and chorus effects. So, without plugging in, you can play different sounds - very interesting! It takes a little getting used to in order to get the right balance - dialling down a bit from the top level settings gives the best mix for me - but it’s an enjoyable and fun process to find out what works for you. If you do plug into an amp, you can still use the effects, which are adjusted via the compact panel on the side of the uke, through your amplifier.

The Flight Diana tenor’s acoustic sound is no slouch either. I do like it when a manufacturer chooses a string brand to match the ukulele, rather that put the same strings on everything. In this chase, the chiming nature of Worth Browns suits the solid cedar top really well, for a well-projected and balanced tone.

There’s a slotted headstock, good quality gold geared tuners, a bone nut and saddle, and on the decorative front, nice red padauk binding and an abalone soundhole rosette.

For me, I’ve watched the popularity of Flight grow and grow, and have now decided to take the plunge myself. With any new technology like the Soundwave, I like to hang on just to find out if it’s going to go down well and stand the test of time. Feedback has been good so I’m delighted to carry these Flight ukuleles now too.
