Flight Victoria Soundwave Wide Neck Electro Tenor Ukulele
The Flight Victoria electro tenor, with the Soundwave pickup system, packs a lot into a handsome looking package. As well as a fine sounding ukulele when played acoustically, it has good performance through and amp… and the Soundwave system provides built in chorus, reverb and delay effects which can be activated and heard even when playing without an amp, courtesy of a tiny inbuilt speaker. Very clever.
The effects themselves are fun and not bad at all. As a veteran of giant pedals boards, yes, they’re not the same, but I spent 5 times more on my effects than this ukulele costs, so for the price what you get is very impressive. You can use them through an amp, or without, and controls are on the discrete panel on the side. You don’t HAVE to use effects either, there’s a volume control to give you a lift too, again even without an amp.
The uke itself is a satin finish solid spruce top model, with attractive laminate back and sides. There’s a comfort edge, for… well… comfort when you’re playing, and a scallop cutaway too for access to the higher frets. The Flight Victoria ukulele also features a slotted headstock and a really nice inlay around the soundhole which certainly stands out against the sea of abalone seen in so many other ukuleles.
The Victoria from Flight has a wider than ‘regular’ nut width of 38mm, which is ideal for those with big hands or anyone who has been struggling with thinner necks. And it is supplied in a smart, well padded red gig bag too.
The tone has some nice brightness that you’d expect with spruce, together with some strength in the middle to lower end, which I find responds particularly well to picking with its earthy, folky tones.
There’s a video demo of the Victoria tenor uke from Flight, if you click additional info below. It’s part of a longer video looking at various ukes, so you’ll want to skip ahead to 4 minutes in.
