Kala’s contour series is a step forward into a more modern aesthetic, incorporating both a larger body, with wide bottom bout, a comfort edge and a wider, 38mm nut width. These features, which are increasingly popular, are combined here in a package with a nicely padded gig bag. With the relative affordability of mahogany, with this model (called the Kala KA-CT-SMH-TG) really comes to the fore on the good value front too.

That solid mahogany delivers impressively warm tone, but it’s quite evenly matched by the definition given by the gloss finish and Aquila strings, giving a nicely balanced sound (for extra mellow nature, probably the acacia model in the series is the one go for).

With a wider nut, at 38mm, it’ll appeal to both players with larger fingertips - but also those who simply like the extra space offered between the strings. And to be honest, it’s 3mm above standard so you may well be like me and be able to switch between different neck widths without too much issue!

These contour series tenor ukuleles from Kala have a very slightly wider than normal body and don’t fit into all gig bags and cases - so it’s handy that a nicely made, well-padded gig bag is included. It’s not particularly wide, just wide enough that if you get a hard case, just make sure it fits first. (I have cases that fit, and cases that don’t - and if you add one, of course I’ll use one that fits haha!)
