Kala Contour Wide Neck All Solid Spruce and Rosewood Tenor Ukulele
The contour series from Kala, of which this KA-CT-SSRW-TG-C is a part, is a really good model for those looking for all solid construction and Kala quality and finish. It’s good that Kala have listened to what players are after and looked at what else is out there, to come up with this tenor ukulele, which a larger bottom bout, sleek cutaway, slotted headstock and a comfort edge. So, lots of plus points, and an excellent padded gig bag too - handy as this tenor’s big bottom might cause problems finding a hard case.
This solid spruce model is, I think, a nod towards the aNueNue Moon Bird, with its solid rosewood back and sides. That, combined with the ‘eclipse’ soundhole decoration and larger bout dimensions certainly seems like a nod in that direction. This one has a spruce crispness and control, with the rosewood adding another dimension of fullness that’s very rewarding to listen to. It comes with Aquila strings and I’ve been known to take the decision out of people’s hands with some models and take those off in favour of fluorocarbons but I’ve not done here. The attack they give is impressive and, to be quite honest, it sounds nice with them on so worth a go - you can always experiment down the line once you’ve established your own views on the Aquila-led sound.
These gloss-finished ukes come with geared tuners and have a wider, 38mm nut width, with a satin finish on the back of the neck. For common extras, like strap button fitting, you can find those at the bottom of the page. However, these are standard options, so ignore the ‘add a hard case’ one as it won’t fit a standard case, but there is that excellent gig bag already included.
