Kala Ka-BMB-T All Solid Bamboo Tenor Ukulele
Perhaps the biggest attraction of the Kala KA-BMB-T tenor ukulele is the material it is made from, and its greater sustainability compared to many of the tonewoods used in ukulele construction. There’s no shortage of bamboo and it grows rapidly, so the ecologically minded can go for one of these with a clearer conscience. True, they’re made in the Far East, so it’s not without its carbon footprint, but certainly, compared to other ukes, it’s a plus.
You could think then that it is a bit of a gimmick, a more ecologically sound choice, but not a great ukulele? Right? Wrong. It certainly stands up well to similarly priced models. It’s got decent, if not massive volume, and a bright(ish) character that veers away from being shrill, but still possess decent projection. In a way, reading that description back it sounds like damning with faint prase, but it’s just that the KA-BMB-T is good, without being outstanding in any one area. Some ukes are very bright, or very loud, or very mellow, and that’s their defining characteristic. The KA-BMB-T tenor ukulele scores well in lots of areas, without being ‘the best’ at any. Am I making sense? It’s really a decent uke, especially at this money.
All of the wood is bamboo, including fingerboard, neck and the very well done slotted headstock. To this are fitted black and gold geared tuners, with that black featuring on the TUSQ nut and saddle and the fitted strap button too.
The KA-BMB-T does certainly lead the way in terms of ukulele sustainability, but crucially it holds its own with more traditional instruments in this price bracket.
