With this exotic looking Caramel tenor from Kala, you'd be forgiven for thinking the quality is all in the looks - but lets dispense with that notion straight away. Yes, the veneer on this laminate tenor uke is extremely nice, but for the price you play there's nothing letting the side down on the sound, specification or playability either.

The tone has decent volume, and is nicely balanced with a fairly mellow edge. That sounds a little like damning it with faint praise - but it isn't a uke of sound extremes. It's got a bit of nice punch, a bit of sparkly highs, and bit of smooth warmth... it's just that no one of these attributes dominates the others, which is no bad thing!

The KA-CARA-BUR-T's lovely appearance comes from the cypress wood used to make it. It is highly figured and looks amazing. Technically the official designation calls the look 'salted caramel'. Now, caramel I can understand, it is definitely a caramel colour - but salted? Anyway, that's a tiny gripe! (Actually, at the time of writing, the manufacturer website says the strings are D'addario, but they aren’t. OK, I'll stop picking now...)

Fitted are Aquila strings, smooth-turning closed, geared tuners, a nubone saddle and Kala's familiar feeling 35mm nut width. It is also supplied in a basic, but free gig bag, which is rare for the Kala range.
