Kala KA-CHOC-BUR-T Chocolate Exotic Burl Tenor Ukulele
This is the Kala KA-CHOC-BUR-T, a nice looking tenor ukulele with a burled camphor body. You can see why they decided to call it as they do, rather than camphor burl - which doesn't have the same ring to it!
This is a good looking ukulele, which sounds very nice - and it’s good value too - but the camphor wood is a laminate. Nothing wrong with that, and this is an example of a good one, but you'd be hard pressed to find this information on the Kala website or most other websites. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a laminate ukulele, but I think it is only right to say that’s what it is!
As well as the pretty wood, which is highly figured, there’s some nice mahogany binding, black and white pufling and a soundhole decoration that blends in well. The binding also extends up the neck of the KA-CHOC-BUR-T, ending in a headstock which also features a camphor burl veneer.
There are closed, geared tuners, which turn very freely and seem effective, Aquila strings, Nubone saddle and 35mm nut, and a rosewood fingerboard and bridge. It feels familiar and unchallenging to play - even from the box and before any adjustments I make, it is impressive in this respect.
The sound of the KA-CHOC-BUR-T is good too, with a mellow backdrop, punctuated with some nice clear trebles. I can't help myself... I am going to have to describe the tone as chocolatey! For this money, it certainly won't let you down.
A plain unbranded, lightweight gig bag is included with this uke.
