Kala KA-SCAC-T5 Solid Top 5-String Tenor Ukulele
The Kala KA-SCAC-T5 is a 2021 reboot of the company's popular solid cedar top 5-string (formerly, the model was known as the even less catchily titled, KA-ATP5-CTG). This new update maintains the solid cedar top and laminate acacia back and sides, changing the binding to a dark rosewood.
While this range has always been good value, with a solid tone, they've changed things at the nut too. There's a bit of confusion around the internet about the neck width, which is 37.5mm at the nut. On first inspection I noticed it was wider than their regular 35mm, then I checked on various sites to see a range of different widths. So, I checked again and yes, 37.5mm it is. This seems a sensible choice with an extra string to contend with, with the G string offering a pair of high and low G strings.
The sound is full and rich on account of that low G, with enough punch from the other Aquila strings to stand up to that bassy tone nicely and even things out.
The Kala KA-SCAC-T5 is a nice looking tenor ukulele, with a gloss finish. That gloss finish doesn't appear on the back of the neck, where the satin finish will appeal to people who find their hands stick to a gloss neck. There are good quality geared tuners too.
