LoPrinzi Model A All Solid Koa Tenor Ukulele
This Model A LoPrinzi tenor uke is made by the talented Donna LoPrinzi in Clearwater, Florida. It’s worth noting before going on that this is extremely well priced, not just as a ukulele made from all solid Hawaiian koa, but when you factor in that it was made by a single luthier, it’s extremely competitive.
This particular LoPrinzi ukulele is made from all solid koa - which has a pleasant red hue. It’s not the most figured of koa, but boy does it sound good. I play a koa ukulele myself, but even so - I wouldn’t say that it’s a guarantee of a good tone at all. In some cases, it’s density, and the energy required to make it vibrate can lead to it sounding a little muted. Well… no such issue here. The LoPrinzi ukulele has a fine tone, with a lovely chime, a rich balanced sound and a liveliness which is very impressive. Koa is an expensive wood to begin with, but I have the utmost respect for anyone who can really make it sing, as it’s not a given at all.
This tenor ukulele has been fitted with Fremont Blacklines - which aren’t always my favourites either but… well this thing sounds so good I’d definitely suggest sticking with them. Why change when it’s so good. Grover geared tuners are fitted too.
This is a lovely uke to play too, with a thin, flattened neck profile and 36mm but with. It’s balanced, set up well and a breeze to play.
What we have here is a luthier made instrument that’s the same price as many factory made instruments. It’s a lot of money, but for what it is, it’s a steal.
