Magic Fluke M20 Natural Tenor Ukulele
This is the USA made Magic Fluke tenor ukulele, in natural finish. A really unusual but now iconic tenor uke, with a 3 ply Australian hoop pine top and a moulded back. The unusual shape looks great, but also means you can stand the ukulele up on the floor... not that that's going to revolutionise your life, but it is handy!
Another unusual factor with this one is the fingerboard, which is made from polycarbonate (very hard plastic), which has fingerboard markers on the fretboard itself. I find this perfectly fine, and easy to get used to - although it might seem a touch odd at first! Still, you're not going to buy a Magic Fluke tenor if traditional is your style, I suppose!
The headstock shape is now less unusual than it has been, having been adopted by other manufacturers, but given these have been available since 1999, it really was ahead of its time. Friction tuners are fitted, and these get a mixed press, but I find these very effective - in fact, before writing this review of the Magic Fluke, I tuned the model up and was up and running straight away.
The Magic Fluke feels very nice to play - with so many precision elements and moulds, it is very accurate, and the 37mm nut width feels nice and spacious. The tone is rich and complex, almost the opposite of what you'd expect - with a nice mellow backdrop punctuated with some harmonically rich trebles - and a decent punch of volume too.
