This is a handmade all solid jumbo tenor ukulele (a tenor uke with a larger than normal body), produced in Taiwain by Millar’s head luthier. It’s a lovely looking thing, true, but the sound is where it’s at (as it should be), with gentle lows aided by the large bottom bout, and searing clarity in the upper register too. It is really impressive higher up the neck, particularly given this one has a low G… the treble strings ring out and compete with that big low G admirably, right up to the upper reaches of the neck. It’s noticeable for me, who uses the G and C strings open for a lot of tunes, just how well those high notes sing out - even when they’ve got to do so over and open low G. It’s has a really powerful voice further up that neck.

The top is made from solid cedar - incence cedar to be exact - named for the fragrant odour is releases when bruised (which, of course, you’ll not want to do!). The back and sides are made from solid ziricote, which has a lovely, deep chocolate colour and veins of even darker grain. These woods are given a high gloss finishm and separated with purple heart binding and irridescent abaolone inlays.

This shell is also used to provide the (frankly cool) Millar logo on the (frankly cool) headstock, which is faced with ziricote and fitted with the excellent rear-facing Gotoh UPT tuners. This one has a 35mm nut width, and is supplied with Worth Clear fluorocarbon strings (with fluorocarbon low G).

As I have come to expect from Millar - one of the handful of producers who pay real attention to their set up from the factory, it is slick to play, with a nice low action. Now, if it hadn’t had this, I’d make sure it did in my workshop… but you know, it’s nice to give me a bit of time off from sanding down saddles isn’t it!?

No bag or case is provided from the factory, but given that it’s slightly awkward to source one (on account of the jumbo tenor ukulele body), I will send this with an excellent quality, perfectly fitting, very well padded gig bag.
