This is an all solid Hawaiian koa, luthier-made in Taiwan in Millar’s custom workshop. It is a large body tenor, with a broader top and bottom bout than a regular tenor. This gives this tenor uke, as seems logical, a bigger bottom end in terms of sound, with a smooth, undulating bass sitting behind the impressively articulate trebles. Koa isn’t always the loudest of tonewoods but the bigger soundbox ensures this Millar isn’t underpowered, so you can tease some nice volume from it if you play hard, or lots of sweet subtlety, with rich harmonics, if you play more gently.

Millar are a small family firm in Taiwan, making some fantastic instruments. Those ukuleles stand out not just for their quality, but for their competitive pricing compared to similar specification models that are also made to exacting standards like this jumbo tenor. Here, superb all solid koa is used to brilliant effect, and while yes, it’s a lot of money, if you consider the cost of a Hawaiian-made jumbo tenor model, you’re looking at a lot more money - and aside from it being made in Hawaii, what would you actually get for that money, given this is handmade by one luthier too?

This Millar is fitted with aNueNue clear water flourocarbon strings, has a bone 35mm nut and saddle, and fantastic Gotoh geared tuners which are as good as you can get for a slotted headstock model like this. The satin finish is so smooth, you’ll have a hard time not to just sit and stroke the wood, never mind play the uke!
