Millar Custom All Solid Sipo & Ziricote Tenor Ukulele
This is a tenor ukulele from Millar’s Custom Shop. When they see some unusual wood sets come in with their suppliers, they’ll often get the chance to make a one-off custom instrument. Often I might be waiting for several of their best-sellers to come back into stock, and instead of finding my order completed, I’ll be offered one of their luthier made instruments instead! It can be a little frustrating but it’s nice that they enjoy making and experimenting. They seem to enjoy this more than fulfilling larger orders that would net them more money - which is charming in a way! Still… when offered, I keep buying them and they’re always good - so I am only encouraging it!
This particular model is made from solid ziricote on the back and sides, paired with an attractive Sipo top. Sipo shares many properties with mahogany (and as such, is often known as sipo mahogany), including warm tones and nice sustain - but with a more earthy, woody sound than true mahogany. With this Millar custom, that warmth is accentuated by the low G that’s fitted alongside aNueNue Green Planet fluorocarbon strings for the C, E and A. It sounds smooth and rounded, and very expressive when played gently - although it is capable of punching out decent volume too if you play a bit harder.
This Millar custom has a slotted headstock, gloss finish and a 35mm nut width. It was made in Taiwan by their head luthier.
There’s a slotted headstock which sports Millar’s custom shop logo. I have never been one to pay too much attention to ukulele logos but I have to say this the best there is, very stylish. The wing shape is also echoed inside the uke, on the laser cut wooden label. Little touches, but nice ones. Flamed maple binding with delicate blue purfling completes the picture for a very handsome uke indeed.
It doesn’t come with a bag or a case, but there are options at the bottom of the page to add one if you wish, as well as strap buttons. This one is supplied with a low G as standard, so you can ignore that option. But if you want to go for high G instead, just get in touch after ordering and I’ll happily put a high G on for you.
