Millar PO-T All Solid Alder and Walnut Wide Neck Tenor Ukulele
This model from Taiwanese company uses an unusual combination of alder for the top, and walnut back and sides. Alder was traditionally used in guitar manufacture, a hardwood that's on the softer end of the spectrum - just above spruce - giving a spruce-like tone, but with a touch more warmth. This manifests itself with a pleasing initial punch of strong projection backed up with shimmering, warmer overtones. Certainly, it sounds lovely so I can see why Millar wanted to experiment with it.
The PO-T from Millar Ukulele has a satin finish, with a slotted headstock faced with the same walnut used for the solid back and sides. It is fitted with Worth Clear fluorocarbon strings, which I'm a fan of, and aged-look Der Jung tuners, which are both effective and handsome. The body is bound with rosewood, with ebony and maple inlaid details - a feature that is repeated for the soundhole decoration.
I like a 35mm nut width as what I am used to, but there are some who prefer things a little wider, and Millar have listened to feedback from the UK to broaden their range to include wide neck models like this PO-T, which has a 38mm nut.
