Millar SP-260W All Solid Spruce & Acacia Tenor Ukulele
The Millar SP-260W is a lovely, all solid tenor ukulele, which brings more choice to the market in a price bracket where there's not always a lot of choice. A lot of manufacturers make either beginner, intermediate or higher end instruments, giving lots of choice up to £400, or over £1,000, but not so much in between. Millar is a small Taiwanese company who make extremely well finished, quality ukuleles which push well beyond the intermediate.
This tenor is made from solid spruce, with an attractively grained solid acacia back and sides. These are separated by some lovely ebony and maple rope inlays and maple binding.
The neck feels unchallenging at 35mm, a rosewood fingerboard and very good quality brushed metal geared tuners with cream buttons. These sit either side of a modern looking slotted headstock. Worth clears are the string of choice for the manufacturer on this model.
As you'd expect with spruce, there's good projection and sparkling highs, which come to the fore especially in the higher reaches of the fretboard. It really is a uke you'd want to explore the dusty end with. The SP-260W doesn't just shine in that area, as against those highlights is a canvas of harmonically rich depth that shimmers so much you can feel it in your chest when you play.
In all, it is a mature sounding, quality tenor, with handsome looks that err on the side of classy, rather than gaudy. The Millar SP-260W is a lovely thing.
