This is a handmade tenor ukulele, build in California by Brad Kahabka. Brad is the luthier at Ohana's custom shop, a new venture from the popular brand as they seek to push the boundaries of what they can offer as a company. This one off instrument is the DPT-KOA, a pineapple shaped ukulele made from all solid AAA Hawaiian koa.

This ukulele has rosewood binding, abalone purfling for added sparkle and an ebony fingerboard and bridge. The nut width is 38mm and it is supplied with an excellent hard case - a custom case made specifically for a tenor uke with a pineapple body shape. It has Gotoh UK-700 geared tuners, which are brilliant.

Although the star of the show is the lovely koa, and its golden hues and rich grain and patterning, there are a number of other very nice visual features too. The headstock shape is asymmetric, and mirrors the end of the fingerboard where it sweeps down at an angle towards the soundhole. This asymmetry also appears on the fingerboard, where the fingerboard markers in mother of pearl appear down the side.

The tone of a pineapple shape uke is generally more rounded and warmer than a standard shaped equivalent, and that certainly seems the case here, with a warm, bold and soft-edged tone. Aided by the low G it's as rich and rounded as they come. It’s certainly a beautiful ukulele to play, listen to AND look at. Clearly Brad is very talented!
