Pono MGTP All Solid Mango Pineapple Tenor Ukulele
This is a pineapple shaped tenor from Pono, the MGTP. This is their satin finish, all solid mango model, with a sandy hue and interesting grain, alongside a simple rope style soundhole decoration.
With the larger body and soundboard, you get a slightly bigger bass response from the ukulele, compared to the equivalent instrument in the more traditional shape. With some natural warmth, and chiming highs from the solid mango, the result is a rich, full sounding instrument with really nice harmonics. It’s chimes well, with a lovely resonance. The sound is very pretty indeed.
The Pono MGTP is fitted with Ko’olau Mahana strings, excellent Grover tuners and a smooth rosewood fingerboard (with that ebony being used for the headstock veneer, heel cap and fingerboard binding). While no gig bag is provided, this one will fit into a regular tenor gig bag of normal dimensions.
With a pineapple tenor ukulele like this, although there’s an advantage, or at least a point of difference, from the body shape, that’s perhaps not hugely marked. It’s worth buying simply as a nice uke in its own right - rather than saying to yourself, ‘a pineapple shape will give me x, y or z that I don’t have already’. In my view anyway.
