Romero Creations TTK All Solid Koa Tiny Tenor Ukulele
This is an all solid koa tenor ukulele from Romero Creations, a compact tenor that has a similar length overall to a concert uke, but because of the unusually shaped body and bridge placement close to the bottom, has a full tenor scale. These instruments can be used with high G, but are one of the rare instruments that come with a low G as standard.
There’s plenty of action at the deeper end of the sound spectrum from that low G, which good strength too in the mids, where the sweetness of the all solid koa comes in. A gentle sparkle in the trebles completes a very nice balance, and extremely pretty tone.
The TTK tiny tenor has a really excellent gig bag included, which is handy given the unusual shape, and has a regular, 35mm nut width. There are very nice, smooth-turning enclosed, geared tuners on the truncated headstock and LaBella strings are those chosen by Romero Creations for their tiny tenor range.
With a fitted low G, you naturally get a lot of bass, and with mahogany being a warm-sounding tonewood, there’s plenty of richness in the tonal profile. It’s got a good dose of volume and the sustain is also impressive, but I do find it suits a gentle, relaxed style of play because of all that warmth. To really carry a melody, you definitely have to dig in hard on the E and A strings to compete with that big low G.
The gloss finish koa tiny tenor ukulele looks like… well, nothing much else! But it’s comfortable and easy to play - it feels perfectly natural in my hands despite that unusual look.
