The Singer RT1M-TS is from a new line of ukuleles made by aNueNue, given a different brand name as they wanted to create some instruments with a more vintage aesthetic and sound. This tenor is made from all solid African mahogany (khaya), with a very well applied, subtle tobacco sunburst gloss finish.

Certainly these instruments do differ from aNueNue’s existing ukes visually, and while they’ve been voiced different to create a little more vintage-style ‘bark’, there’s clear influences from aNueNue’s luthiers too, in how the strong sustain sings out and how plenty of depth is teased from the uke. This is accentuated by the traditionally warm mahogany, but… it also manges to maintain a lightness, and delicate nature to the sound when you dial things back a bit. This makes it versatile, with scope to bring plenty of volume to the table if you strike the strings with more attack.

The Singer RT1M-TS is fitted with excellent Gotoh UPT tuners - rear facing, lightweight units that keep the uke looking traditional, while having gears for those used to modern tuning machines. The nut with is 37mm, and this Singer ukulele has a slightly radiussed fretboard too. Some like this as it matches your finger’s natural shape better and find barre chords easier. Personally I’ve played so many that a neck could be toblerone shaped and it’d feel normal. But others certainly notice a facilitation of easier barring!

Completing the picture are aNueNue’s popular Black Water fluorocarbon strings and an excellent, dark green hard case.

I had to think hard about whether the ‘vintage’ brief had been fulfilled, and there’s definitely a more subtle tone that’s really very nice. They’re also different to other aNueNue ukes (and therefore that seems to make it a worthwhile enterprise to make them. But vintage or not, they’re certainly extremely nice!
