Uma Baby T Small Body Tenor Ukulele / Super Concert
I had a bit of a debate with myself over the Uma Baby T ukulele, whether to put it in the concert or tenor section of the website, as it has a concert size body, with a tenor scale neck (35 mm nut width) What wasn’t in doubt though was what a fantastic value instrument it is. It has a laminate acacia body, which is pretty, and a neat satin finish. The Baby T also has fluorocarbon strings and a bevelled comfort edge.
Although it sounds really nice and very good for the money in particular, perhaps the biggest plus for the Baby T is the fantastic playability. A great low action and in particular, it’s so easy with barre chords. And that’s from the box before I’ve looked at it. A great set up then, is a given, as it’s nearly there as it is before I even look at it. So good.
Although an included gig bag is a nice thing, it’s not what I’d call a deciding factor on choosing a ukulele - but in the ‘case’ of this Uma and it’s unusual format with the small body and longer neck, the included decent gig bag is a bonus.
The tone is crisp and lively - but not lacking in body - with good volume, nice projection and a real zip in the trebles. In that respect it is more traditionally a concert in its sound, but with that longer tenor scale length for those who prefer that scale. It sings very sweetly, and while nice with chords, is even better for a bit of picking - something which I’d urge you to try with this model. While laminate models can sometimes lack a bit of a lustre, this is as far from flat and lifeless as you can imagine.
