Uma UK-20STP Black Wide Neck All Solid Mahogany Pineapple Ukulele
This is a really good value tenor uke from Uma, with a pineapple body shape. Why a pineapple? Well, the larger body gives a bit more roundness / fullness to the tone, and the larger surface area of the top gives a touch more volume - a volume that’s slightly warmer than a regular body shape. The UK-20STP is a nice looking option for people wanting to dabble in the world of pineapples, but to do so with a tenor size, where traditionally there haven’t been as many options, compared to sopranos and concerts.
The tone of the UK-20STP is full, delivering waves of smooth, richness. When I talk about that warmth, it’s balanced well - with the fluorocarbon strings giving sweetness, some brightness and a sparkling projection too. So it’s not muddy, but full, with the bass tones and harmonic richness balanced by some punch in the top end.
The Uma UK-20STP has a slightly wider neck than standard, with the 38mm offered giving a little more space for those among us with broader fingertips, while only being 3mm wider than ‘standard’ - meaning those with less sausage-like fingers won’t find it an issue either. I set the the UK-20STPs up with a lovely playing action, which combined with the light gauge strings makes them effortless to play. When I say effortless… you’ll probably still find the E chord tricky but that’s the fault of the E chord not you or the uke! (When asked how I manage to play E, I always cite that chord as the reason the band I’m in play original songs, so we can avoid it!)
There’s a nice padded, grey gig bag with this Uma pineapple tenor uke, with an accessory pocket. You can therefore ignore the option to add a gig bag amongst the standard add-ons you’ll find at the bottom of the page. You should also skip the hard case as this pineapple shape one won’t fit a regular hard case and a special option (which I can source) is required. You can add low G, for extra warmth (it suits it, I have to say, despite being regularly a high G player), or strap buttons.
