These strings are handmade in the USA, and have been put together for a baritone ukulele to provide a low G, GCEA tuning an octave below a regular tenor.

There are three wound strings and one unwound string (the A) in the pack. The set allows people who like GCEA tuning, but want to play a baritone, to maintain their usual tuning and chord shapes, but keep a big, low, rich sound.

That’s the good news. The bad news is the sets are made by hand in a tiny workshop in California and, for a set of strings, the price is extremely high. Not because of me I assure you! I got a little taken aback actually with the cost, including shipping, when they were ready for me. When I added on enough for VAT and shipping in the UK… phew, that’s a lot for a set of strings!

My impressin of these strings is they’re good for picking, giving a nice rounded sound but with enough clarity to carry a nice, deep-voiced melody. They work when strummed, but I think best with a very light thumb stroke, or lighter strum with a fingernail. Because the guages are quite thick, if you really hammer out strums then you get a bit of rattling between strings and frets (in the same way when guitarists strum an acoustic heavily, you hear a bit of rattling).

When installing these strings, it’s advisable not to trim the strings until they’re fully installed. Get them on and up to pitch and then snip off any excess afterwards.
