This is a brilliant value concert uke, made with a solid spruce top and solid cherry back and sides. The Baton Rouge UTC-C is ridiculously inexpensive, given this specfication - at a price point where usually everything is laminate - this uke is all solid. Add to the fact attractive features like hardwood binding, an abalone soundhole decoration and a comfort edge and you could be forgiven for thinking to yourself, ‘shall I just get one anyway’, even if you don’t need one!

The only downside for me is there are numerous models in Baton Rouge’s rECOtimber range (which use European woods, treated with heat to accelerate the seasoning process), and they are mostly fairly similar. So I end up going on about value a lot (the key feature). But if you’re looking at other ones too, this one with the cherry back and sides is perhaps slightly crisper than, say the slightly softer sounding one with maple back and sides.

Aquila strings are fitted, and these give a big burst of initial projection, and some pretty throaty bass response too, for a generally bright sounding wood combination. It’s nicely balanced, although you might, when they needed changing, consider experimenting with fluorocarbon strings too, for longer sustain. There’s a eucalyptus soundhole, geared tuners and a 35mm nut width.
