In theory Kala’s KA-CG is a gloss finish version of their workhorse (and to be fair, workmanlike) KA-C concert uke - an instrument that is very popular, if a little… unexciting. The KA-CG’s only upgrade would be the nicely applied gloss finish. But, despite that, it seems an all round better ukulele, with a tone that has a softness to it, but just enough sparkle to be interesting and pretty. It is, if you ask me, well worth the extra, minimal expense over the KA-C.

I know that with the UK’s most popular violin brand, many of the models start out the same, and the different instruments are then graded according to how nice they are, then they’re finished and become different models at different prices. I can’t say the same with this, that the best KA-C’s go on to be finished as KA-CG’s, but certainly that’s the effect you get, as it’s really very nice for the money.

The Kala KA-CG is equipped with robust, closed geared tuners, Aquila strings, a Nubone nut and saddle and features some white binding around the body to give the laminate mahogany a lift. And, while that mahogany is fairly plain (as a wood in general), in this instance is it really quite pretty. There’s one strap button fitted as standard too.

If, as you might well be, you are newer to the ukulele world and have heard the name Kala given as a solid, reliable brand, then this example of their work is an ideal instrument to get going with.
