This is an elegant concert ukulele made by Donna LoPrinzi in the USA. She makes lightweight, resonant ukuleles, often using local woods, and this all solid cherry uke is a great example of her work - which tends to be ‘no-frills’ in terms of decoration, but bold, bright and harmonically rich in terms of sound.

This concert uke has a really nice, chiming voice. It’s sweet and bright sounding, but also packs a bit of a punch with some good depth - with the two coming together nicely to balance out well. Fluorocarbon strings are fitted, as are Grover friction pegs, and it has a 35mm nut width and ebondy fingerboard and bridge. It plays very nicely - Donna’s set up is, for me, better than many luthiers, regardless of the price level / standard of work they produce.

It is near and tidy, without a huge amound of decoration, though the abalone soundhole rosette is well executed and the stripe of maple and mahofany down the back of the neck (also made of cherry) is a nice touch.

Ultimately this a ukulele made by a well respected luthier who produces work which, while it doesn’t hit the heights in terms of fancy inlays, stands up really well in terms of sound - and particularly price. I know this LoPrinzi cherry concert ukulele isn’t inexpensive, but when you figure where it has come from and that it has been made by hand, it’s very competitively priced. There aren’t many prominent female luthiers, but I can defintiely say the sound of this concert uke proves that she’s very highly skilled.
