Wow, wow, wow, I love this Millar custom concert, from their custom shop. I picked it up, tuned it up, played it for 30 seconds and then reached for my phone to document the fact it made the hairs on my arms stand on end! And yes, weird as it seems, I decided to include that photo here to prove it. It’s phenomenal.

The sound has everything. Nice volume, lovely clarity, sparkling trebles and a warm wash of complex depth. It’s lovely to play, with the flattened portion of the back of the neck under the lower frets forming a nice anchor point for your thumb - plus the fact that Millar always take such care in their set up too. I’ll check things and make minor adjustments, but they’re a company that puts as much into this aspect as their build, which is refreshing.

This custom concert is made by Millar’s head luthier in their custom shop in the small family business in Tawain. This model has a red cedar top, with solid ebony back and sides, and a gloss finish. Decoration is quite understated, with some delicate orange purfling alongside the dark wood binding. After that nothing to distract from the lovely wood - although the sharped end to the rosewood fingerboard, and it’s mirrored shape in the headstock is a nice touch.

This instrument has a 35mm nut width and is fitted with Worth Brown fluorocarbon strings and Der-Jung rear facing geared tuners. For a selection of popular add-ons, like low G fitting and strap buttons, scroll down to the bottom of the page (yes, underneath THAT photo of my arm!).

I recently sent some feedback to Eric at Millar, passig on some praise from a happy customer. He replied saying ‘that’s great to hear, because I am always worried that I’m not good enough’. He’s totally wrong, but clearly this mindset drives him on to improve what they do. This custom cedar and ebony concert is fantastic, and proof that the sky’s the limit for this company.
