This is the Millar SP-240L, an all solid spruce and acacia concert ukulele made by the small family company in Taiwan.

It’s a cracking uke, which is just as well as this is the third time I’ve written this description, inexplicably managing to delete my previous two attempts in error. So, I’m well versed in describing this powerhouse of volume! If you are struggling to be heard in a ukulele group, this is just the thing to give you a lift (maybe not overpowing the banjo ukulele players, but everyone else would get a run for their money!). It is explosive in its volume when you play hard, but is still capable of a greater subtletly when played more expressively and softly.

The top is solid spruce which does deliver a bright, forward sound. But this is tempered by (very pretty) solid acacia back and sides, a satin finish and Worth Brown fluorocarbon strings. The latter are a great match for the Millar SP-240L, and as usual, have a great knack of allowing a uke to be clear and bright, while delivering a slightly warmer edge to the tone that ensures the sound is never harsh.

The decoration on this model will split people into two camps - those who love it and those who don’t. The first camp will find that on this model the decoration is very well done. Those in the second camp? Well, they’ll probably not have got as far as reading this!

I like the fact that Millar put so much attention into their set up - getting things right from the factory, rather than leaving it to a dealer to rectify issues. True, I do make some minor adjustments, but they’ve clearly invested time into getting them to play well, as opposed to just sell well. And with a standard 35mm nut width, an easy action and a satin neck, it’s a comfortable playing experience.

This concert model was brought out after the success and rave reviews of the Millar SP-210LL, the long neck soprano uke with the same materials and design. And it’s a worthy addition to their output, with a bold, strong voice and striking looks.
