This Uma Moon-SC concert ukulele is an exceptionally well priced instrument with so much going for it for the money, not least of which is the fact that the top is solid mahogany.

The gloss finish is well applied and typical of the rest of the very tidy build. There are some nice visual features alongside, including the prominent maple soundhole decoration and the section of maple inlaid on the top. Just a note on this though, it is purely decorative (and gives the uke its ‘moon’ name) and isn’t a bevelled comfort edge. Very pretty it is, and striking, and different… and with so many models on the market these days, being different is a big plus.

The rosewood fretboard is nicely shaped to meet that soundhole rosette, and the clear fluorocarbon strings are smooth under your fingers, and held in tune by good quality, robust feeling chrome geared tuners. The back and sides are laminate mahogany, but as mahogany goes, it’s nicely patterned. Completing the specification, a good quality grey padded gig bag is included also.

Having played a number of mahogany Uma instruments, you can start to hear a particular character in the ukes made by this Taiwanese firm. They do possess a fullness of body and a level of richness synonymous with solid mahogany, but there’s a real sparkle in the trebles that matches this too. So you get a bit of a best of both worlds scenario, making this more of an all-rounder than a gentle, deep mahogany instrument might usually be thought of as.

There’s plenty of volume and a good level of sustain, and that balance makes it ideal for all sorts of playing. I’ve enjoyed the clarity in the picking, and that swathe of gentle richness when strumming with the pad of your thumb. The Uma MOON-SC is a versatile concert and is a pleasure to play. The low price compared to its quality makes it a pleasure to pay for too… well, if not a pleasure, certainly less painful than it should be!
