Millar SPL-210 All Solid Sapele Soprano Ukulele
A while back Millar produced a handful of solid sapele soprano ukuleles in their custom shop and they looked and sounded amazing. I was keen to get more, but the sets of birdseye sapele - that looked so good - had run out. Instead, they’ve made this model, with its lovely, petite body shape, with regular sapele. So, on the eye, not as appealing (sapele-ing?), but still an excellent, balanced tone with plenty of volume and a mix of solid tonewood warmth and sprightly soprano zing and pep.
Those custom models had posh tuners and a gloss finish, while these are satin and have (perfectly good) Der Jung geared tuners. But then again, those customs were £599, so these are very much more affordable and sound fab.
It can be an issue with Millar deciding which of their many soprano models is right for you. I have the same issue with my stock, I just get them all as they’re always great for the money. When you look at what they stack up against in comparable price (like a Pono MSD for example), these are brilliant. Light, lovely to play and excellent value.
