Millar Custom All Solid Red Cedar and Ebony Tenor Ukulele
This is a handmade tenor ukulele, produced in Millar’s custom shop in Taiwan. It has been made from solid red cedar, with very pretty solid ebony back and sides. The cedar gives it a crisp, chiming tone, with the ebony back and sides dialing down the brightness a little and filling out the sound with a delicate, complex richness. It’s a light richness… which I am aware might make no sense! It’s not a thick, heavy sound, but a harmonically pleasing, complicated and breezy sort of tone. I don’t know… you try and come up with a way of describing something that sounds really nice without just saying, ‘it sounds really nice’, and it all gets a bit complicated!
The cedar has a night tight grain, with a biscuit-brown hue, and the ebony’s grain is rich and varied. The two are combined in a clean and classy way, without a huge amount of decoration. The more reserved look still looks modern, but classic, all in one.
This Millar custom model has a 35mm nut width, bone nut and saddle and a set of Worth Brown strings fitted. It also has Der Jung geared tuners, which are rear-facing, again accentuating those clean, smooth lines.
